The function of the teeth is to break down food into smaller pieces (mastication). Their shape is perfectly designed for this purpose having many cusps and grooves. This provides an irregular surface to tear and grind food matter. the coating of the teeth is comprised of enamel which is the hardest substance in the human body so can endure much wear.
