Clean lines and sharp detail on this histological cup and saucer set represent the otherwise dirty job of digestion.

The mucosa is the innermost layer of lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This is comprised of the oesphagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine and large intestine. Food passes through the lumen which is the centre of the tube. Along the length are cells and glands that secrete substances to aid digestion so that absorption of nutrients can occur. Muscles in the outermost layer help push food through the intestines.

The cup and saucer depict the epithelium, lamina propria, glands in submucosa, muscularis mucosa, submucosa, circular muscle, longitudinal muscle and serosa.

Part of a unique range of fine china illustrating the anatomy and histology of the digestive system.
